the gulf of alaska pushing into northern california for tuesday and wednesday. we are seeing temperatures in the morning just in the 20s and highs in the afternoon in the low 50s , but first, we have to deal with this rain. 11:00 p.m., notice most of the rain pushing to the south in the overnight. 6:00 a.m. still rain in the east day and south bay, but things already begining to lighten up. a few scattered light showers through noon and then relatively dry conditions. then tuesday, we have another weak system coming down the coast, but most of this rain will stay offshore. still a chance for a shower tuesday. and again maybe even a thunderstorm coming through briefly. temperatures tonight and into tomorrow morning, coolest north bay, mid 40s here, definitely not as cold. same for the east bay. as we go into the afternoon, look for mid to upper 50s , low 60s for the south bay with partly to maybe even mostly sunny skies at times. and here's the 7-day around the bay. so this week will be pretty interesting. tuesday and wednesday, blustery, cool. especially in the morning. look at the inla

york to northern california creating christmas chaos for some parts of the country. >> we're hoping we don't sit on the runway. we did that last time and it's not fun. >> reporter: in chicago, paula gagerman and her three daughters arrived early for their christmas eve flight. they are among the millions taking to the crowded skies today. what's that stress like when you got to get somewhere and you're traveling with family and it's not -- mother nature is not cooperating? >> extremely stressful. >> we're like, come on, come on, come on. we just want to get there. come on, we're going to be late, we're going to be late, come on. it's really annoying. >> reporter: in northern california, a huge storm caused a big wrench in weekend travelers' plans. >> after i found out my flight had been canceled after four hours of waiting in the airport, i had to wait in another three-hour customer service line. >> reporter: and it's not just in the air. on the roads, holiday travel is up 1.6% this year. some 84.4 million americans getting behind the wheel. and another 5.6 million traveling by plane.

for that part of the region and some more snow expected, a good portion of northern california if you are taking interstate 5 up through shasta, be extra careful. there is a chance we could have some freeway closures. look at this winter storm warning out towards the sierra. snowfall 2 to 5 feet. that's a lot of snow and that could cause some problems on the roadway as we head into friday, saturday and sunday. here's our forecast model for today. we're starting out dry an increase in the high clouds. we do bring in a chance for rain showers up in the north bay. you will notice the south bay's still dry but then into early friday morning we're tracking rain clouds. we'll have wet pavement to start out our can friday morning commute. for today, increasing clouds, the chance of a shower up in the north bay, especially toward the latter portion of the afternoon. a pretty active forecast, some rain and wind, tapering off into the afternoon. a second storm producing heavier rain. saturday morning and possibly a third one into sunday as well. have to keep an eye on the rivers and the streams out there

section of the northern california coast. kron 4's charles clifford has details >>reporter: earlier today in washington the president gave a green light to the national oceanic and atmospheric adminstration, or noaa, to come up with a plan for expanding two of northern california's marine sanctuaries. let's take a look at a google earth map. this is a view of san francisco looking north across the city. to the west, off the marin coast is the gulf of the farallones national marine sanctuary seen herer in green. it covers more than 1200 square miles of ocean and includes the farallon islands and the waters around point rays. to the north is the cordell bank national marine sanctuary which includes more than 500 square nautical miles. now, under the proposed expansion the cordell sanctuary would be more than doubled in size, as would the farallones sanctuary which would be extended north to point arena in mendocino county. if approved the expanded sanctuaries would include more than 50 miles of coastline and protect more than 4500 square miles of ocean. northern california representative ly
